Monkton Village Fayre, Saturday 7 July 07
by Maria Jenkins, 11 July 2007
What good fortune the community of Monkton had when the sun decided to shine on the day of the Village Fayre on the 7th July 07. All of the hard work paid off for the local people and groups who worked with the Communities First team, as the crowds poured in to support the Fayre.
The Villlage Fayre was opened by County Councillor Pearl Llewellyn, the weather got better throughout the day
The event was opened by County Councillor Pearl Llewellyn, Chair of the Monkton Communities First Partnership. The Communities First team used the Fayre as an opportunity to chat to local people on the Community Action Plan that they recently put together along with members of their Partnership and other agencies. This proved to be a very useful exercise giving the Monkton Partnership plenty of work to be getting on with on behalf of the community.

The Pembroke Amateur Boxing Club set up a boxing ring and encouraged people to 'have-a-go' throughout the day, with Ralph Gammer coaching the aspiring Scott Gammers! Scott was kind enough to find the time to sign autographs and encourage the boxers in the ring. Ruth and Michelle attracted people throughout the day with games and competitions.
Scott "the Hammer" Gammer spent the day talking to, and signing autographs for the fans
Inside the Hall many of the volunteers from the Clouds Living Centre were rushed off their feet all day serving a sensational Sunshine Salad, along with scrumptious jacket potatoes, delicious desserts, and drinks for the thirsty folk of Monkton. Linda tempted locals with tubs of ice cream which were a welcome relief considering all that glorious sunshine!! Just outside the Hall Cara and her crew from the Tanyard entertained the young ones with activities and games.
Everyone thought the food was delicious
As promised, resident compere/performer/DJ/entertainer/ comedian Neil Thomas chased people around the field with his mic, inflicting his jokes on all!! He was a class act throughout the day, music flowed and he kept all of us amused with his antics! Bongo Clive arrived and entertained both children and adults with his amazing collection of instruments, teaching people how to use them.
The rhythms from "Bongo" Clive's music workshop captivated the younger and older participants
There were activities from Princes Trust and Circus Malarkey, stalls and raffles from Pembroke 21C, Monkton Voice, Monkton Sports and Community Assc. (Community Hall), the new PCSO's, Springboard, and Vanessa returned to paint all the little faces! Silent World educated folk on reptiles, producing a live Boa Constrictor among other slippery creatures! Paul and his Bouncy Castle contributed in keeping the young ones occupied, with the Sumo Suits keeping the adults out of mischief!
The Mayor of Pembroke Keith McNiffe arrived with his wife Michelle and there was no escaping Paula who throughout the day did a fantastic job of pouncing on everyone to buy raffle tickets! WP Lewis came up trumps again, by donating the use of a transit van for the event. And Chevron, true to form, were very kind in donating £200 to the event. The raffle prizes won were as follows:
Monkton - Pembroke's Latin Quarter?
The Monkton Salsa Dancers delighted us with their moves, which they all learned in less than a year of attending classes at Monkton School! They were a joy to watch, with many people rushing to sign up for the new September class under the Springboard project.
The final performance of the day was 'Jack and the Book Keeper' by TPP Productions. What a hit with the crowd! A fun, energetic, educational show to keep everyone amused, not just the children!
The play was a great round off of the day!
Monkton Communities First are grateful to all those who helped to organise the event, to those who helped to entertain on the day with stalls and/or activities, to those who battled with the marquee and to everyone who attended. A big thank you goes to all those who sponsored raffle prizes, and funds raised from the raffle, ice cream sales and car boot sale comes to a fantastic 547.88 which will go into the pot for next year's Fayre!
